Welcome... to the garden where the Flower Fairies live! A Flower Fairy's job is to look after her plant, polishing leaves and trimming flowers. 

A Flower Fairy is 5-10 centimetres (2-4inches) tall, and has a pair of delicate wings. She, although a Flower Fairy can be a boy too, dresses in the leaves and flowers from her plant to help her stay hidden. A Flower Fairy is not at all fussy about where she lives.

Hanging baskets, window-boxes, a tiny crack in a crumbling wall or between the pavement stones where weeds and mosses grow - any of these places might be home to a Flower Fairy. Since almost everyone has a potted plant, or can see a patch of grass, or treetops from their window, this means that almost everyone is close to a Flower Fairy even if they don't realise ti at the time! 

花の妖精たちが住むお庭へようこそ！花の精たちのお仕事は、それぞれの草花を世話すること。葉っぱを磨いたり、花びらの形を整えたり。

花の精は、大きさは５－１０センチメーター（２－４インチ）で、繊細な羽を持つ。彼女は（男の子の花の精もいるけれど）隠れて暮らせるよう、それぞれの草木の葉や花びらを身にまとっている。花の精は、住まいに関して全く気難しいわけではないけれど。

吊るされているかごや、植木鉢、崩れた壁の小さなひび、雑草や苔が茂る歩道の石畳の間ー　あちらこちらが花の精の住まいになるわ。沢山の人々が、鉢植えや、芝生、窓によりかかる木の枝などに触れているから、それはつまり、皆、気付かないうちに花の精のそばにいるっていうことなのよ！

This book is about a group of Flower Fairies who live in a very big garden. The flower beds are dense with pretty plants that flower at different times of the year. Hear the Flower Fairies live crowded together in sociable groups, cheerfully chattering and playing. There is a rose garden, where lavender is planted to attract the butterflies. Other parts of this garden are so overgrown that nobody has walked there for years - down by the stream there are reeds and rushes choking the water, the trees hang over, and the hedges are woody through lack of pruning. Here the Flower Fairies are wilder, and less friendly・・・

この本は、あるとても大きなお庭に住む花の精たちのお話し。花壇は、様々な愛らしいお花が季節ごとに咲いて、いっぱい。ここでは、花の精たちが、仲間同士で元気にお話ししたり遊んだりして賑やかに暮らしている。バラ園もあって、そこには蝶々を魅了するラヴェンダーがあるわ。他の場所は、草木が伸びすぎて、何年ももう誰も入っていないのー小川のふもとではアシやイグサが水の流れを詰まらせ、木は倒れかかり、生け垣も刈り込みが足りていない。こちらの方の花の精たちは、おとなしくしていられなくて、少し意地悪かも・・・

Marigold

In the flowerbed, Marigold takes up the sunniest spot. Her petals open up to greet the sun in the morning and close again when the sun goes down. During the day, Marigold takes no notice of her hairy friends, even though they try to persuade her to play with them. Instead, Marigold perches happily on a flower and soaks up the sunshine.

マリーゴールド

花壇で、マリーゴールドは、太陽の陽が一番あたる明るい場所を予約している。朝になると彼女の花びらは、太陽に挨拶するために開いて、太陽が沈むとまた閉じる。昼の間、マリーゴールドはお友達の妖精たちに気付かない。一緒に遊ぼうよ、と催促されているのにね。代わりにマリーゴールドは、お花にちょこんと腰かけ、ご機嫌そうに陽の光を浴びている。

Tulip

The busy flowerbeds are home to some exotic Flower Fairies. Tulip is a visitor from the land of Persia. It didn't take Tulip long to make friends with the other fairies in the garden as she is always polite. Tulip also tells great stories about faraway lands.

Whenever fairies are feeling sad, they come to Tulip for advice. And because Tulip is wise and has seen a great many things, she always has advice to give.

忙しい花壇には、ある外国から来た花の精も住んでいる。チューリップは、ペルシアの土地から来た訪問者。チューリップは、いつでも丁寧だから、お庭でもすぐに他の妖精たちと仲良くなった。それにチューリップは、遠い異国の素敵なお話しをしてくれる。

妖精たちは、悲しい気分になった時、いつでもチューリップのもとへ来て相談する。チューリップは賢くて、色々な素晴らしい物事を見てきているから、いつだって助けてくれるの。

Nasturtium

When it's time for a Fairly Banquet, Nasturtium's flat leaves make perfect plates. When spring rain appears, Nasturtium lends out his leaves to the other fairies to use as umbrellas. When the hot summer sun shines down, Nasturtium's leaves make perfect circles of shade. But when the winter snow blows in, Nasturtium is sleeping and nowhere to be found.

ノウゼンハレン

妖精たちのパーティーが始まると、ノウゼンハレンのたいらな葉は、素敵なお皿に変わる。春の雨が降り出すと、ノウゼンハレンは、その葉を傘の代わりに、妖精たちに差し出す。夏の暑い太陽が降りそそぐ時は、ノウゼンハレンの葉は本当に良い日陰となる。だけど冬の雪が舞う時は、ノウゼンハレンは眠ってしまってどこにも姿を現さない。

訳してみて：　

　イギリスでは、独自の庭園文化が栄えている事などからもわかるように、各々の家がガーデニングを楽しみ、そこにファンタジーの世界を夢見る事が多い気がする。ワーズワースの詩や、ターナーの絵画のように、田園風景に芸術の着想を得たり、又、ピーターラビットやクマのプーさんのように、身近な自然の中に児童文学のキャラクターを産み出すのだ。ヨーロッパ的な合理主義の発展の一方で、そのようなおとぎ話し（妖精は特に、他にも魔女やオカルトな類も含む。）を大事にする姿勢は、非常に興味深く思える。

　本作のシシリー・メアリー・パーカーは、そのような、国民に愛され続けるアーティストの一人で、1895年サリー州生まれ、20世紀初頭に『花の妖精』シリーズで有名になる。ラファエル前派に影響を受け、更に、植物学的にも評価できる程の観察力をもって、とても活き活きとした妖精の姿が非常にリアリスティックに再現され、これを見ていると現代の私達まで、庭の花や葉、それから雨、太陽の光、等々、当たり前のように思える自然の営みひとつひとつをしげげと眺めてしまう。それは、神道の精神にも似ている気がするし、何しろ、まるで本当にこのような妖精のいたずらっ子達が私達の日々の生活を幸せにしてくれるようで、想像するだけで楽しくなってしまう。

　イギリスでは、お土産屋さんのキャラクターグッズにもなっているくらい非常に人気があり、私も、今でも、イギリスで出会った大好きなアーティストの一人となっている。
